Selection Principles

The Club Committee has set down the guidelines in which the selection committee operates for the year. From here on, selection is the domain of the selection committee (comprised of the chairman of selectors and the captains). The chairman of selectors has the prerogative to diverge from these guidelines where he can justify it. Club committee members are not to publicly air their views on selection.

• First XI: At all times this must be the best possible team.
   
• Second XI: To be comprised of either: senior players (ex firsts) capable of immediately stepping into the firsts to plug a gap or younger players being blooded. (There is no point playing legends/old-stagers in the seconds even if they are in form.)
   
• Availability: The selection committee has the prerogative and discretion to penalise players who take games off by making them come back through lower grades.
   
• Financial: Players need to be club members and pay their annual subscription. Unfinancial players will not be eligible for selection. A grace period until 1 December is granted.
   
• When all things are equal, consideration needs to be given to attendance at training, youth, and fitness.
   
• In the event of a deadlock, the Chairman of Selectors is to decide.
   
• Players who have been dropped and are present at training will be counselled by a member of the selection committee. Players who are unable to train in this instance are invited to seek feedback from the Chairman of Selectors or other members of the selection committee.
   
• It is essential to pick balanced teams. In instances where in-form players are in lower grades for team balance, this needs to be explained to the players.
   
• It is a privilege to take the field each Saturday and club members should be happy to play under any one of our captains.
