SECRETARY’S REPORT

This report outlines the outputs and achievements of the members who make up the Deepdene Bears Cricket Club in the Eastern Cricket Association for 2006/07.

The season has been a mixed one for the Bears with only 1 Senior ECA team and an older Vets team making the finals after 3 sides were in the running at Christmas. Whether it was the very long mid season break but a number of teams lost momentum after Christmas after being in contention. Individually a number of players had fine individual seasons but a lack of depth in the bowling generally hampered the Club’s on field success across most grades. Ten tons in a season including some overdue big ones from the Sturgess brothers were an individual highlight as was the ongoing development of younger players including Garts, Mick Morello and Will Mueller.

On field the club had frustration with selection, bad pitches particularly at Stradbroke Park, where helmets were needed to protect ankles rather than your head, and collectively we let a lot of winnable games in all grades slip from our grasp. Daniel Sturgess as first XI Captain and Club Coach led from the front with the bat and at training and his enthusiasm for the game and love for Deepdene Bears is commendable. The First XI finished 6th which was below expectations for the team. The 2XI in B Turf after a promising start faltered and finished 8th. The 3XI suffered from the selection issues in higher grades which meant that Dewy needed to go up and struggled to have half the same team each match and finished 8th but showed they can be very competitive in C Turf against effectively 2XI’s. The 4XI made the finals but were unable to win their semi final on Mont Albert’s disgraceful oval at Elgar Park on a bounceless “pitch”. The 5XI were led by Chris Day and Geoff Baker with Chris returning to the Club after many year’s absence and they enjoying the company of 44 other players who were part of the team for the season.

The Juniors were again run very effectively by Dave Doolan and parents with 7 Junior teams and a Milo group and a thank you goes to Dave and all the parents for their time and efforts in helping the kids have fun and represent the Deepdene Bears. A number of Junior players also played in the Seniors and the link via Chris, Dools, Danny and others which was good to see. Unfortunately Dools was unable to get his U14 dream team over the line in the Grand Final

Off field probably the best Committee I have been involved with worked very hard to ensure the Club’s reputation and financial position was maintained. The players do not see the hard work (or phone bills) that occur to arrange overseas and local recruits, functions like the Moonee Valley Presentation Night, trivia night and others and food and drinks after training. Belly and Luke are stepping down after running the Bar and Social for a while and your efforts have been sensational for the Club. All Committee Members and players now need to put their hand up and take on a role to ensure the Club functions effectively and doesn’t rely on one or two individuals. The role can vary from cleaning the rooms to putting the covers out for overworked Captains on a Friday night so please bear that in mind for 2007/08.

The Vets were another new concept that Tim organised this season and were a great success. It was good to play under Johnno (didn’t give me a bowl) and watch young Fish and co mix with past players I certainly hadn’t heard of including a Bishop and others. Geoff also got a bowl on turf and it was very enjoyable except the final.

A big thank you to Matt for his help with inputting stats into the computer each week and for helping with this report and to Garts and Goof for the minutes.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In my mind, there are only 3 yardsticks to measure success at our club

  1. Spirit of cricket and community
  2. Financial stability and viability
  3. Finals

Firstly, let’s consider finals. Congratulations to the Fourths and Vets who finished strongly on the table to both go down in the respective semi finals.  U14B made it to the GF to come up against a better side on the day. The disappointment of missing out in other grades remains. On balance I don’t think we passed the yardstick for finals in 2006/2007.

Financially it was a strong year. Our Treasurer (Ando) was right on top of his budget model and our bar steward (Belly) showed what can be done with some professionalism in the catering department. We had some new and novel fundraising (like ebay and the stockmarket) that all helped. In early 2008 we will host our Auction night – start thinking.

In terms of the spirit of cricket and community I have the following brief observations:

  • Our overseas player for the year fitted in well. I hope that his first class experience rubbed off on to some of the emerging talent.

  • The junior program is strong and well managed and the junior coordinator (Dools) is to be congratulated again.

  • Coaching is a strong point with skill development opportunities for those keen to avail themselves. Training attendance could be better.

  • Lack of team stability was a weak point. The unavailability list handled by the selectors tested their patience to breaking point.

  • We were saddened by when one of our popular senior players passed away during the season. The support of the club was noted by the family who asked me to pass on their thanks.

  • During the year the ECA fined us because a player had non-white socks. Other than this infraction, I believe that Deepdene Bears set the standards for on field behaviour.

I’d like to extend my thanks to all those people who knuckled down to take on tasks (big and small) at the club.

FIRST XI CAPTAIN’s REPORT

Season 06/07 began early October with some new faces for the Deepdene Bears. Steve Robinson, Wendell Labrooy and Matt Wilson were all added to our squad. Departing from the side that played finals the previous 2 seasons were Hal Hiramatsu and David Molloy. We always knew replacing those two players would be difficult.

Our season’s result of 5 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw to finish 6th was in my mind 2 wins short of what we should have achieved. A few close losses and the fact that we had to rotate 18 players through the side didn’t help.

On the positive side were some fine individual results that the guys should be proud of including:

  • Luke Sturgess showed great maturity after Christmas to held down the number 4 spot with the highlight being his 108 against Canterbury. The challenge is there for Luke to work hard and keep improving his game.

  • Steve Robinson’s first year at the club was fantastic. He worked hard on his game in the pre-season and throughout the season and his innings of 93 not out against St Kevins was a delight to watch.

  • Mick Morello showed a lot of character to fight back from a form slump and smash a sensational 100 against Richmond Union. Mick has a heap of talent and I would love to see him become a gun bat for the club.

  • Joel Aitken also showed on a few occasions just how good he can be. With a strong work ethic and dedication to training he can become a fine batsman and leader for the club.

On the bowling side of things, Luke Gartner and Wendell Labrooy carried the attack throughout the season. Luke keeps improving his game and 22 wickets was a great result that he should be really proud of.

Wendell was a real professional who fought really hard on the ground. Throughout the season when he was challenged he stood up and showed some real fight for the team.

Matt Wilson behind the stumps is a real team man and hard worker for the side. He showed on numerous occasions some real quality with the bat and I look forward to seeing Matt continue to improve his game in future years.

Thank you to Justin Strempel for your support and understanding of the hard decisions that were made. You are a true Deepdene Bears man and I know that you will come back bigger and better next season.

There are some players who finished the year in the seconds such as James Norton, Luke Cosgrave, Michael Evans, Brett Cottrell, Blake Blain, and Justin Strempel who have all played First Eleven cricket and the challenge for that group is to become regular ones players and help get the First Eleven back into the finals where we belong.

To Tim Norton and the Committee a big thank you for your support and assistance over the season.

Also thank you to David Doolan and the other Captains for all those selection meetings we took part in. Dools you do a huge job for the club and we all appreciate it.

Thank you to Steve Rimer and Greg Fisher who assisted with training throughout the season.

Finally, for the club to become more successful we need more commitment from everyone. Training numbers dropped away this season on some nights when the weather was a bit hot and then on some other nights we had a huge turnout with people demanding to have a bat which made things very difficult to coordinate.

I believe in any sport you must put in some preparation. I also believe we can all make it to training at least one night a week even in these busy days of work and family.

When choosing to play a sport I feel you are making a commitment to the club to be available for the majority of the season. I understand that we have a large number of younger guys coming through the teams and when you choose to make yourself unavailable due to holidays, it has an affect throughout the whole club. Each season we get roughly a 3 week break at Christmas time which is an ideal time to plan your holiday break around. This is something we all have to deal with while trying to achieve some success.

Thank you to the 18 players that represented the First Eleven this season.

third XI Captain’s Report

Overall the season could be rated as average. We finished 8th, 18 points off 4th and 3 points off 11th. Given that we played a grade higher, “C Turf” and most sides we played were 2XI’s, one a 1XI and another a 3XI, we were very competitive most times and pushed the better teams.

The season did not start well and when you play one round with 10 men (a no show), and lose a one dayer by 9 runs chasing 160+ and fielding with 10.

The bright side were the debuts of Liam Grigg (54no) and David Morello who both showed they will be great additions to the club in the future. Liam with the bat & gloves and David with his allround versatility. Also making  their debut in the 3rds this season were Kapil with a 5 for against Canterbury and also Will “Ferris” Mueller who finished the season in the 2’s.

Another notable performer during the year was the Chairman “Dools” with two match winning innings of 81 and 92 not out to secure wins against Canterbury & Burwood. Also figuring in significant partnerships with Dools on both those occassions to help gain victory was Anton Suresh with partnerships of 100 & 108.

As the stats indicate there was little continuity within the team as indicated by the games played. Further to this team changes were mostly a minimum of 4-5 players each game which added to the inconsistency.

As usual “Chippy” was his reliable self with the ball and was always willing to do the hard task at the end of the innings when teams were upping the tempo and also on those hot days when another spell or a few extra overs needed to be extracted. Young Matt Patto also impressed with his work ethic at training, which undoubtedly flowed over into Saturday and he should continue to improve with more hard work. Another was Anton whom also trained hard and was rewarded with the bowling honours.

Unfortunately it was a bit of a nothing season in many ways but the players that worked hard at training certainly reaped the benefits of that training and effort, not only in this grade but others players within the club and that should be the key factor that all in the club should note.

Finally congrats to Dan on his great season with the bat, the 4’s for making the finals, all those that made tons and took 5 fors, Dools on his amazing job as chairman and as usual Patto for his tireless behind the scenes work and of course the tremendous work of the “Bar-Bell”.

Tim Dew,

and Grant McRae for 3 games and Steve Rimer for 2.

FOURTH xi captain’s report

06/07 was an interesting year for the 4th Eleven.  It was a year in which blending the right mix of experience and youth was often hampered by player unavailabilities.  When the club had a relatively full complement of players to choose from and sides could be picked on merit, the makeup of the 4’s proved to be a very competitive one.

It was a pleasure to see a couple of our younger players perform to the extent that they established themselves as part of the “core” group and earned promotion to higher grades.  I will remember 06/07 as the season when both Nick Millen and Will Mueller turned unfulfilled talent into match-winning output. It was great to see Andrew Ryan return from serious injury and his bowling significantly improve.  Niall Morrison’s fielding was exemplary and I congratulate him on winning the fielding award.  Chris Keys showed outstanding potential and James Doolan made some valuable contributions, particularly with the bat at Tooronga.

Once again we had great contributions from our experienced core.  Congratulations to Ian Grant who was a deserved winner of the batting averages.  He had a terrific year with the bat and was the foundation of our batting all year.  Congratulations must also go to Kevin Hannett for winning the bowling averages.  His bowling all year was fantastic and his ability to tie down batsmen and take wickets at the same time was often the key to us winning games.  He was ably supported by Greg Fisher and Peter Bakes who toiled manfully, often bowling long spells for little reward. Mark Sturgess, with his knack of taking wickets just when we needed them, and Greg Keys with his guile and competitive instincts, were also cornerstones of our attack.  Mark Campbell was as solid as a rock with the gloves and his return to batting form towards seasons’ end was a welcome relief to one who marks his own card so severely.

The seasons’ main highlight for me was making the semi-final, despite the result, along with a couple of memorable wins. In particular, our wins against Tooronga Districts away and the eventual premier Richmond City twice, were a testament to our teams’ fighting spirit.

In closing I’d like to thank the Committee for allowing me the honour of captaining the side and for providing me with wonderful on-field support in the form of Mark Sturgess. I’d like to thank my fellow selectors for their assistance with an often difficult job and in particular David Doolan as chairman of selectors who applied himself diligently to a largely thankless task. I’d like also to extend a special thank you to Jo Campbell for helping out with the afternoon teas.  Her efforts were greatly appreciated by all players. Thank you also to the Friday night helpers who got down to put the covers on and thank you to all the guys who willingly took on roles of a Saturday to set things up and pack them away.

Last but by no means least, thank you to the other 32 Deepdene players who helped share my passion for the last six months.  I enjoyed every minute of it and I can’t wait till we get to do it all again in October.

Fifth xi captain’s report

Much like global warming, the fate of the 5XI for Deepdene Bears is affected by events and team success further up the food chain. A little undermanned for most of the year, and on a few occasions reduced to 8 or 9 players for some games, the 5’s nevertheless should probably have finished mid-table. A tie early in the season could easily have been a win, which would have ensured 7th or 8th place.

As it happened and despite 2 barnstorming batting efforts in the final 2 games the 5’s finished ninth. Batting throughout the year was usually strong with scores well over 200 most games (and 400 in the last). It was the lack of real penetration in the bowling that saw us struggling to defend what should have been competitive totals.

Highlights were the first win of the year – a 1 day game before Christmas at Fairfield where despite only 7 players appearing for the first ball, DBCC dismissed the opposition for 197 and effortlessly peeled off the total without losing a wicket (Nick Millen 107, Tim Dew 84). In another strong batting performance against Glen Iris, DBCC made 255 with a fluent 127 by Will Mueller – his maiden century and an innings, which kicked off a great run of form for him in the 4ths and 3rds.  In the final match of the year Mike Hudson plundered 179 (scored mostly in boundaries on a groin friendly small ground). Probably worth about 47 on a normal oval, his 320 odd runs in a handful of games were Raz at his best.

Positives for the year were (despite shortages and disappointing results) that games were always played in good spirit and good humour. The 5’s was always a blend of experience and youth with team balance often resolved at short notice. Youngsters like Ed Doolan, Sam Grigg and Mark Warner - sometimes playing their 3rd game of the weekend throwing themselves around (and usually in front of) more seasoned players like Tony Watkins, Mike Hudson and Phil Warner.

Tim Norton often gave us a brisk start, Rob Wyles always gave 110% and James Doolan showed form with the ball that suggests he’ll have success at a far higher level. Geoff Baker’s help each Saturday was much appreciated - including Captaining the team for several matches. Dave Doolan’s support whether for the senior team or the 5ths on Thursday night or 10 minutes before the game was unflagging. .

The key to success for the 5s is to have a core of 5 or 6 regulars, which we didn’t quite manage in 2006/07 and scope for veterans as well as juniors. The obvious lowlight for the year was the passing of Peter Gannon – whose enthusiasm, humour and abiding fairness was an example to all who knew him.

VETERANS

We took the field for seven home and away games plus a semi final. Some matches were on synthetic wickets, but we were pleased to play our home games at Deepdene Park on days after the firsts had tuned up the wicket for us. By and large, the opposition players were nice blokes and the compulsory post match BBQ was well attended.

A focus of the vets campaign was to get past legends, parents of juniors and new (old) blokes to the club. Typically, this got us two thirds of a team each fortnight and we are grateful to the Saturday vets who also made outstanding commitments. Some players made their return to Saturday cricket after being blooded by the vets.

Losing only one game meant that we finished on top of the ladder for a home final. Batting first we made only 123, but excellent bowling and fielding kept us in the game until the match was marred by an ugly umpiring decision from the Mazenod captain at square leg.

Averages don’t mean much with limited over games that include retirements so we instituted a Brownlow style 3/2/1 voting system.

The unaudited voting was a follows:

  • Watty 9
  • Waldo 5
  • Granti 5
  • Dunn 5
  • Fish 4

Watty’s contribution with bat and ball was outstanding and I congratulate him as the player of the year.  Granti made well over 100 runs for only one dismissal and Cam massacred some attacks. Given some consternation about their youthfulness, we awarded the most valuable “senior” player to Waldo.

Special thanks to the guys who were most likely to help out on match day led by Tumma and Geoff. Waldo and Johnno, having been a great sounding board all year, were press ganged into a selection committee when it looked like some tough decisions were needed at finals time. Johnno took on the on-field leadership role when others had finals jitters.

It is not wise to think too far ahead, but we have every reason to believe that Vets will return again next year for Deepdene Bears. Maybe we can get Hira and Dolly to play for us against Mazenod!

Vets Coordinator

JUNIOR OVERVIEW

In 2006/7 the Deepdene Bears fielded 7 junior teams, with 2 in each of U16s, U14s, U12s and 1 in U10s. In addition to this we conducted the Milo Have-A-Go Clinic on Saturday mornings.

The emphasis was, as always, on participation and improvement and the attitude of the boys in terms of including all team members in the action was outstanding.  All teams were competitive as indicated by their ladder positions at the end of the season:

U10     won 4 games and tied one

U12C  4th

U12B  5th

U14C  4th

U14B  2nd (the Grand Final loss was the only loss of the season)

U16C  5th

U16B Gold     8th

There were many outstanding individual efforts throughout the season, and improvement was evident in all boys over the season.  Highlights of the season were centuries by James Lindsay (again) and Rockson Kwok in the U16 grades.  Rockson won the Association Average for his grade, whilst James Lindsay won the coaches award for the ECA U16 Representative side in which he played.  Michael Taylor also represented the ECA at U16 level.  Award winners are listed below.

U16B Bowling Award           Michael Taylor

U16’s

Teams were fielded in B Grade and C Grade.

Three rounds into the season Deepdene Bears amalgamated with St. Barnabas CC to compose a formidable line-up in C Grade.

Both teams had consistent results with the boys showing great improvement and consolidating their skills.

Thanks to the Coaches – Chris Amiconi and Chris Grigg and to many parents who helped out with both teams, in particular Lily Taylor, Mike Kelly from St Barnabas, Adele Wright and Jenni Quin.

U14’s

Teams were fielded in B Grade and C Grade, with both teams making the finals.  The C Grade team were defeated by eventual Premiers, Canterbury in the Semi-Final, whilst the B Grade team lost their only match for the year in the Grand Final, having finished the home and away rounds on top of the ladder.

Both these teams displayed great spirit and sportsmanship and we can only hope that the keenness shown now continues through to senior ranks in future seasons.

Thanks to the Coaches – Andrew Warhurst, David Gorfine, Danny O’Shea and Andrew Foster and to Tonia Doolan who got practice started most nights.

U12s

Teams were fielded in B Grade and C Grade under the guidance of Ian Poyser and Paul Lane.  Performances were very encouraging and improved throughout the season, and it was obvious from attendances at practice, by both players and parents, that the U12s were a very happy crew.

U10s

The Club fielded one U10 team which was coached by James Doolan in his 1st season of Senior cricket. Due to ground availability we entered a Sunday morning competition which allowed us to play at Leigh Park.

James was ably supported by a group of enthusiastic parents, or at least as enthusiastic as you can be at 8.00am on Sunday!  Being just 16 and not having a drivers licence James was appreciative of the transport provided to and from matches by the Watt and the Leptos families (as were David and Tonia).

Milo Have A Go

A total of sixteen energetic boys participated in Milo Have a Go cricket this year.  In this group there were seven first timers to the game and nine players who either doing their second or third year.  It was pleasing to note that at least four of last group played for Deepdene Bears in Under 10 cricket.

The main idea of Milo Have a Go is for the children to have fun and enjoy cricket and along the way develop their skills and learn about cricket.  I believe this was achieved as most Saturday mornings there were minimal absentees and the children were a delight to coach.

A few note worthy points during the year were:

The successful grid game during the tea break of the 2nd XI game -Deepdene Bears vs Mont Albert

Watching the children catch water bombs.

End of year parents vs children game

The smile on their face when they took a wicket or hit a four (priceless)

It should be noted that from this group up to five children will most likely play for Deepdene Bears under 10 next year.

As usual thank you to the parents who volunteered to assist in running training groups and thanks to the children who attended.  In particular the Club acknowledges the effort of Phil Dunmill in leading the Milo HAG Programme.

Conclusion

The current crop of juniors coming through our ranks should see Deepdene Bears prosper in ECA cricket circles for many years.  We are seeing are just beginning to see the benefit of promoting juniors flowing through the Club and our the Junior pioneers – Peter Bakes, Michael Cosgrave and Tim Norton can look back with much pride on the programme they commenced.

The Club owes thanks to those who helped throughout the season when conscripted to the unofficial junior sub-committee – Andrew &Tina Warhurst, Lily & Russell Taylor, President Tim Norton, Arthur & Georgie Bell, Andrew & Kathie Watt, Andrew and Eva Foster, Simon Day, Danny O’Shea, Paul & Caroline Lane, Ian & Cathy Poyser, David Gorfine, Adele and Owen Wight, James Doolan, Chris Leptos & Julia Trafford, Grant and Lisa Whitbourn George & Melinda Braoudakis, Kathy Cook and Phil & Kerry Dunmill.

Finally thank you to my wife, Tonia for your support and affording me the time to be involved in promoting local junior cricket.
