a definitive summary of our 1st 80 years but an example (albeit in
rough bullet points) of the type of information we want to ensure is documented
within our clubs archives. We anticipate that Wisdene will remain our book of
both personal & club records and that over the next few years we will be
able to cross reference Wisdene to a formal history of Deepdene dating back to
our formation in 1920. (please see the first draft that relates to our
formative seasons leading to our 1st premiership)
We need your help on three fronts. We need you to let us
know where we have got it wrong, as the detail is important. Please dont rely
on someone else drawing it to the editors attention. In addition, the club also needs a few passionate volunteer
historians who are interested in taking responsibility for researching &
documenting a period in our history (perhaps a decade - even the current one).
Luckily we have a sound starting point with the work that our club historians
have documented in The First 40, 50, 60 & 70 year publications.
Similarly, Wisdene will form the basis of many legendary tales. Lastly we are
anxious to acquire ant memorabilia or supporting factual documentation that
will help piece the D.C.C. jigsaw together.
Our goal is to be able
to fully document the rich history of the Deepdene Bears Cricket club,
as we approach our 100 year anniversary. Please contact
Welcome to the New Millennium Edition of Wisdene. There have been two seasons since the last edition of Wisdene went to print so all new entries relating to these 2 years will be displayed in bold italic print. We have been fortunate to locate missing North Kew CC scorebooks and also the Deepdene CC Annual Reports from 1965/66 and 1966/67 seasons. If you have any reports/scorebooks/etc not mentioned in the bibliography detailed at the back of this publication or you may question some of the material, or just some additional information regarding our Clubs history, please let me knowe.
New Sections have been added or previous ones enhanced to make Wisdene an even more enjoyable read. Our Club announced and celebrated its Team of the Century during the 1999/2000 season which in now detailed in this edition. We have also completed our most successful decade as reflected in the number of premierships including the dual premiership season for our 3rd & 4th Xl in season 2001/2002.
Special thanks to Greg Fisher for all his help and research towards this special edition of Wisdene and to my wife Michelle for her support and putting up with the many scorebooks, annual reports scattered throughout the house over the last few months.
Enjoy!
In
the couple of years since the last edition and Wisdene, a lot of changes have
happened to the Club in such a short time.
This includes the Wisdene growing from 80 pages to 106 pages with new
sections included for the first time such as DCC players who have represented
the ECA/ESCA and other association teams ; ECA/ESCA batting and bowling
averages winners etc. We have discovered
scorebooks from the North Kew Cricket Club but still the majority of these
books are missing.
As
part of the 80th Anniversary of the Clubs formation in 1920/21,
plenty of research has into our history especially the 1920s & 30s. Proudly, we have located previously
unrecorded detailed data from newspaper articles / photos, ESCA Annual Reports
and Club memorabilia from past players and their families who made available
these valuable items for the Club to record and copy.
As,
part of all this work into the Clubs history, we have included a brief
Chronology of these 80 years to reflect our past glories and also a few items
of interest that corresponded around these times.
Of
course, as mentioned in previous editions of Wisdene, we wont have the full
details due to lack of resources.
However, if you can provide us with any further source documents not
mentioned in the Biblography or question some entries in this publication, we
would be happy to follow them up as best as we can possible.
Please
enjoy reading this Edition and any contributions you may have will be
appreciated.
Preface to 1998 Edition
The
1997/98 was the first year of the new Deepdene Bears Cricket Club resulting
from the merger of the North Kew Cricket Club and Deepdene Cricket Club. The new Club fielded six senior teams for
the season, which has allowed even more great team and individual performances
to be recorded in the Wisdene Bible.
Unfortunately,
this edition of Wisdene does not include any individual records from the North
Kew Cricket as most of that clubs scorebooks from previous years could not be
located.
However,
this has not stopped many of the former North Kew players from entering Wisdene
as many of them set new Deepdene records with bat & ball. In fact, one of the few categories that
could not be updated this year was the Premiership table as none of our 6 teams
won a flag. Hopefully this can be
corrected in 1998-99 and I will have great pleasure of updating our premiership
wins upon the completion of the next season.
In
an ongoing effort to improve Wisdene, we would like investigate any queries of
misinformation, omissions or ideas that you may have picked up while perusing
this document (eg approximately what season and grade you remember your team
. Any supporting documents (eg Annual
Reports) should be sent to the Club Secretary to follow up.
Enjoy!
It
is now a goal for the Deepdene Cricket Club to issue the Wisdene annually. This will not only to inform readers of the
latest records, triumphs and trivia of the Deepdene Cricket Club but also
reduce any room for omissions or errors in this publication which may occur
when researching multiple seasons at a time.
As mentioned
in previously, in an ongoing effort to improve Wisdene, we would like
investigate any queries of misinformation, omissions or ideas that you may have
picked up while perusing this document.
Any supporting documents (eg Annual Reports) should be sent to the Club
Secretary to follow up.
Enjoy
your reading.
It
has now been four years since the Wisdene has been updated and in that time,
Deepdene have added three premierships to their tally. Again, this club has had many superb team
performances in this period including outstanding individual efforts which have
all been recorded in this update.
As
predicted in the Preface to the 1992 Edition, the Wisdene has increased
substantially increased with the 4th XI competing (and subsequently became
premiers) of E Grade Non-turf and D Grading Non-turf since the last Wisdene
update.
Unfortunately,
the 4th XI has folded due to lack of numbers but their successful, though
brief, record is now included in this edition.
Wisdene has increased by fourteen pages initially to accommodate the 4th XI statistics but also
spacing different statistics to make it easier to read.
I
hope this edition of Wisdene continues to be read with interest and enjoyment
in the tradition the previous editions created.
In
the ongoing effort to improve Wisdene, we would like investigate any queries of
misinformation of omissions that may be missing. Any supporting documents (eg Annual Reports)
should be sent to the Club Secretary to follow up.
Thanks
to Greg and P
Kevin
Hanson.
Rob Merriel and Michael Cosgrave must have been mad.
Just updating Wisdene for three years is a large task, let alone creating new
sections.
The concentration in this edition is an updating of
records only, and hopefully in the future this will be made easier via the
development of a database of current player career history. This database is to
be updated at the end of each season.
The information in Wisdene is continually growing
and the introduction of an E Grade Non-turf team in 1992-1993 as well as being
in A Grade Non-turf for the first time will mean the next editions records will
increase massively.
I
look forward to the enjoyment and arguments readers of Wisdene have, and am
happy to receive comments on inclusions (or exclusions) at any stage.
Thanks to Andrew Livingstone for his support with
this project.
Kevin
Hanson.

As well as adding the surprising number of new
records for this edition (not just 10 new partnership records for B Non-turf!)
I have inserted the following new categories:
Most games in a career
Most runs in a career
Most wickets in a career
Most instances of 5 wickets in
an innings
Most dismissals in a career by
a wicket keeper / fieldsman
Worst running between wickets
(who could ever forget this one).
It must be noted before those on the hill and other
stalwarts of the fifties and sixties get too upset that the career figures are
not complete for these players due to the inability to locate any records prior
to the 1956-57, or the year 1958-59.
In addition, difficulties have been c
The wicket keeping records have also been
substantially updated (surprise, surprise!) as has the "pairs" entry.
Heaps of them in the sixties, but only one in the past five years - wonder who
that was!!
Any suggestions for new entries would be gratefully
received.
Many thanks to Mike Hudson for arranging the typing
and printing of this edition.
Michael
Cosgrave.
This is the first major update to Wisdene. It
incorporates the records up until the end of the 1986-87 season. It also
includes the many record breaking performances of the past seasons that were
pointed out to me following the debut of the Deepdene Cricketers' Almanac.
The scorebooks and DCC Annual Reports that were
missing in the original compilation of Wisdene have yet to be located. If any
reader knows where I can locate the missing records or copies of them, please
contact myself or any other DCC Committee Member.
I must thank Mick Cosgrave (an avid Wisden and
Wisdene reader) for proof reading this Edition. Mick suggested that I include
his record as the wicket keeper who has missed the most stumpings in the Club's
68 year history but I decided to keep it quiet. Many thanks to Phil MacIsaac
for arranging the printing and binding of this Edition.
Rob
Merriel.
Compiled by Robert Merriel to the end of the 1983-84
season. All records apply only to Eastern Suburban Cricket Association (ESCA) matches. Performances in
the ESCA Junior Competition are not included in this edition.
The records used to compile Wisdene are all the
scorebooks currently available to the Club. They are the books for both the
First and Second Eleven's for seasons 1983-84 back to 1964-65 (except either
book for the 1966-67 season which cannot be located). In addition I have used
the Deepdene Cricket Club Annual Reports covering 1956-57 through to 1983-84
(except 1958-59, 1965-66 and 1966-67, copies of which cannot be located). This
is the first of many editions of Wisdene. Bec
Many thanks to my wife, Karen, for putting up with
the DCC scorebooks piled on the dining room table. Another in the long line of
silently suffering cricket widows.

First ball of the innings!! A lovely shot by Sturgess to deep mid wicket. An easy couple. A third perhaps? Oh no! Sturgess run out going for a fourth. Any suggestion of a mid-wicket collision must surely be brought on by too much amber fluid.

A Turf V Glen Iris 1980/81
Chasing 134, DCC lodged an official protest. Play did not start until 2:25pm at Glen Iris on the second day due to a wet patch on the wicket, just short of a good length. Despite the bright sunny conditions and the dry ground, there were the remains of an ice-block on the wicket.
DCC made 6/158 with C. Day top scoring with 42 not out.
Weird
|
- Camberwell started their second
innings at 5.50pm, and after playing one ball the batsman appealed against the
light, stating a tree at the back of the bowlers arm was a problem. The two umpires conferred, after which one of
them borrowed a bat, took guard at the wicket and asked the bowler to send one
down. He smartly dispatched the ball to
the boundary, whereupon normal play resumed until 6 oclock.
Camberwell vs
Deepdene at Stradbroke Park 1946
- G. Johnson was the Captain of the Senior Turf side during 1978/79. He played all 12 games but did not bowl himself once. Unbelievable.
- On 23/2/91, G. Keys and C. Day opened the bowling for DCC B Turf V Richmond City and at 5:50pm, opened the batting together.
- In a one day game V ANZ Bank on 1/2/92, DCC's C Turf team dismissed the opposition for 112 which included 6 run outs. S. Day was involved in all of them. The following season against the same team DCC dismissed the opposition for 120 which included 5 runouts.
- David Finn has made 4 fiftys for the club. The unique thing is that it has been over 4 decades, one in the 60s, one in the 70s, one in the 80s and one in the 90s.
- On 23/11/96 in the A Non-turf V STC game, No. 9 batsman Abiq Sengupta hit ten catches to oppositions fieldsmen of all which were put to ground including four chances off consecutive deliveries. His innings came to an end when he was stumped for 32.

Trophy Winners

Whilst his Deepdene career was short, he is remembered in this trophy and in the legacy provided by every subsequent winner.
